Meet Jennifer Hargreaves, Founder & CEO of tellent

FcF: Tell us about yourself?

Jennifer: I am Canadian born to a British mother and Kiwi father - they gave me the travel bug! My work and love of adventure has taken me to New Zealand, New York and London, UK. I love to solve problems, be challenged and be outside! I returned to Toronto five years ago after living abroad for 12 years. You can find me most days, dragging my children out on city adventures or escaping to the country for a hike on the Bruce Trail.

FcF: What is tellent?

Jennifer:

tellent's mission is to accelerate women's progress in the workplace and increase opportunity equity. We are a diversity recruitment and social impact organization. We have partnered with thought leaders, industry and women to build a platform and network that allows access to an untapped wealth of expertise and experience - women seeking flexible work arrangements.

We believe that collaboration, innovation and collective action is required to create lasting and impactful change in our society and in our economy. Diversity of thought and full access to all talent will be required to stay innovative and relevant in the future of work.

If you’re looking to build your career through work that works for you, you’ve found a partner! We support women of all race, colour and religion including cis-women, transgender, non-binary people and those who are otherwise marginalized.

FcF: How did you come up with tellent  ?

Jennifer:

I started my company tellent in 2016 when I couldn’t find work that worked for me. I was looking for a career that would allow me to pursue my professional ambitions and live the kind of lifestyle that I wanted. For me that meant professional growth and leadership and raising my young family. I couldn’t understand why companies who desperately wanted more women in leadership didn’t have better flexible work policies. It seemed bonkers actually.  especially as a culture of work life balance and flexible work is the number one consideration that experienced professional women look for when considering a future employer. tellent was started to help women find those flexible work cultures and opportunities.

FcF: What are your tips for founders in forming/recruiting/finding their advisory board?

Jennifer:

Find people who are passionate about your mission and can bring a combination of positivity and experience to the table. There will be enough naysayers on your journey, surround yourself with people who have different perspectives and can contribute constructively to what you are trying to build. If you are a solo operator, diversity at the top is limited! You need to have those varied voices and perspectives to think differently and solve problems.

FcF: What were the first 3 steps you took after you knew you wanted to pursue this idea?

Jennifer:

  1. I agreed on a budget and timeline with my husband (I didn’t stick to either)
  2. I conducted phone interviews and researched my target consumer
  3. I launched a facebook group - it was low risk and let me “test” the idea. If it failed, I hadn’t really invested that much in it.

FcF: How did you meet your Co-Founder? What do you look for in a Co-Founder?

Jennifer: I am passively looking for a co-founder. When I launched my company, I looked hard for the right fit and didn’t have much luck. I was forcing something that wasn’t quite right. I know now that when I am ready and when the opportunity is right I will find someone to take this company to the next level with me. The most important qualities I am looking for are  mindset, expertise and “why”.

FcF: What advice do you have for other women who have a start-up idea or side project idea?

Jennifer: Go for it! Test out your idea. You don’t have to go all in to start, just start. Put up a facebook page, open an instagram account or tell a friend. Take it from an idea and start with small steps to bring it to life. What have you got to lose?

FcF: How can the Female CoFounder community help you?

Jennifer: If what we’re building resonates with you, please talk about us! Spread the word and connect us with other awesome women. We have exceptional talent looking for freelance, flexible and rewarding opportunities (and we’re having a lot of fun)

FcF: How can people contact you?
