FcF: Tell us about yourself.
Joanne: I studied Marketing and Data Intelligence in Concordia University. I didn‰Ûªt know what I wanted to do, what type of marketing I liked and to touch upon. All I knew was that I wanted to experience different types of outreach to customers. I‰Ûªm passionate about learning new things and wanted to own something. I started it all by being on Reddit. Loving skincare, I came across threads and posted skincare that I purchased.I really liked the process of packaging out the products and shipping them out. I always found myself over purchasing just to resell it, so I decided to create and sell my own products.I didn‰Ûªt want to sell beauty products because I didn‰Ûªt have enough knowledge to add value to people. And so, I decided to go through my problems and what pain points I had. I found that I had too many beauty products and stationery on my table, making my workspace so messy. This is why I decided on creating acrylic desk organizers.
FcF: What is Minima Basics?
Joanne: Our minimalist acrylic desk organizers are the essentials to make a desk fully organized and make your overall working space motivating and inspiring. We have a mission to help other female entrepreneurs to stop feeling overwhelmed and make their home like a productive place to work instead of going to other places like a coffee shop, co-working space, library and more. Minima Basics only sells compact, convenient, high quality products that are aesthetic pleasing to add in their vanity.
FcF: How did you come up with Minima Basics?
Joanne: I was having problems with having the perfect working space, I did not have an organizing system for me to stay organized and I had so many stationery, so I figured that others would have the same problems as I do, as other female entrepreneurs who works from home, would often have to go out and work outside of their home.
FcF: What were the first 3 steps you took after you knew you wanted to pursue this idea?
Joanne: My first 3 steps were to qualify my idea among customers, what would people like to see and what would they buy, and validate my idea. Then, I had to search for a qualified manufacturer, I needed to try several to choose the best one and that would make my products of highest quality. Finally, I had to create and build a brand, so people could find Minima Basics easily and just connect with my current followers.
FcF: What advice do you have for other women who have a start-up idea or side project idea?
Joanne: To start with your own business, have an idea and pursue it. Start with a pain point that you or your consumer seems to have, and you need to be passionate to talk about it. Do not just keep that idea, but really start working on it. It is just an idea if you do not make action.
